Market Authority: Carmelite Market becomes a spooky stage

Krampus and Perchten runs have been an Alpine tradition for centuries and are still held today in large parts of Austria, Switzerland, Bavaria, and South Tyrol. The market authority is bringing this folk custom to Vienna and will organize one on Friday, December 12, 2025, at the Karmelitermarkt in Leopoldstadt.

Things kick off at 5:00 p.m. when the Krampus group Nigri Diaboli unleashes its eerie figures with a breathtaking fire show across the market grounds. Starting at 3:00 p.m., our honored guests, Deputy Mayor Bettina Emmerling, Susi Stach, and Karl Fischer, along with the market office, will be serving punch to visitors in exchange for a small donation. The proceeds will go to the Lichtblickhof benefit.

Market Director Andreas Kutheil on the event: “The Market Office is always trying new things to make the markets more appealing to the people of Vienna. Two years ago, we caused quite a stir with a Perchten run here at the Karmelitermarkt. The public liked it, and that's why we're bringing the Krampus here this year.”
